Rouen, the land of impressionism, full of history and potential for students!

Rouen is a city with a population of over 110,000, located half way between Paris and the famous Normandy beaches. Boasting an exceptional historic heritage and virtually unique in France, it offers a pleasant living environment that attracts an increasing number of visitors. The town that inspired large numbers of French masters such as painter Claude Monet and writer Gustave Flaubert is now a vibrant, much sought-after student town.

Nicknamed the "city of a hundred spires" by Victor Hugo, Greater Rouen is a conurbation with a population of 406,000 located in the region of Normandy. Classified as a City of Art and History, Rouen has the highest number of listed buildings per head in France! And to discover these, nothing beats a gentle stroll through the streets of the historic centre: Rue Saint-Romain with its medieval charm from the city's last half-timbered houses that line it, Rue Damiette, cradle of the Antiques district (the Quartier des Antiquaires), the Rue du gros horloge, home of Rouen's famous clock and which leads to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Rouen, the most iconic building in the city, the Place du Vieux Marché, or old market square, so symbolic in the history of France for being where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake in 1431 and where you can visit the famous Joan of Arc tower, the Tour Jeanne d'Arc. Then, you could visit the banks of the river Seine with their very industrial architecture, offering you a great walk that you will find both relaxing and artistic with Panorama XXL, a cultural site unique in France. And for food-lovers, there is the Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande every year on the third weekend in October. And yes, ventre does mean "belly"! You could also sample traditional macarons, sweetmeats and other Rouen specialities

Rouen is a good city in which to live and study. Its 44,911 students enjoy a wide range of higher education courses at its two University Technology Institutes, its IPAG business school, IAE management school, ESPE teacher-training school, ESITech school of engineering and university centre for continuing education. When it comes to activities, Rouen organises a range of cultural and festive events every year, such as the Normandy Impressionist Festival (more than 450 multidisciplinary events including exhibitions, live performances and festive gatherings), the illumination of the cathedral, the Thursday terraces in July, and the free concerts on the Waddington peninsula featuring performances by the big names of French chanson. Public transport is provided by the Astuce network, which offers special student rates to help you spend less getting around (€247.50 for an annual pass or €20.87 for a monthly pass). In short, Rouen is an ideal city for students!

PS: It is also France's No. 1 city in the rankings for having the most bars! Interesting right?

What else is there around Rouen? If you fancy taking a break, here are some of the best things to try around Rouen: Segway tour of Le Havre, water activities in Deauville, virtual reality getaway at Caen VR theme park, or perhaps spend some time on the Normandy landing beaches.
